Start9 소개
Start9 is a company built around sovereign computing, letting users drop dependence on centralized cloud services by running a private server. Its operating system, StartOS, helps people discover, install, configure and use a wide range of open-source software so ordinary users can own and control their personal server without trusting a third party, keeping control of their data in their own hands.
The project returns data and permissions that traditional cloud models hand to others back to the user: on a private server, worries about privacy, censorship, hacks and fees largely fade. Start9 offers prebuilt servers and a DIY option, with a marketplace, documentation and developer resources so users can self-host everything from communication to finance as open-source apps, following the idea of being your own everything.
On July 24, 2026, Start9 released StartOS 0.4.0, a ground-up rewrite six years in the making: an LXC container runtime replacing Docker/Podman, a new StartTunnel reverse tunnel, WireGuard VPN gateways, built-in DNS and Let's Encrypt, Tor as an optional plugin, plus differential backups and cross-server restore, with x86_64, aarch64, riscv64 and Raspberry Pi images. The release requires a fresh install, with no in-place upgrade path.
On May 5, 2026, the Start9 team used a Citadel Dispatch interview to detail the Server One home server, a RISC-V router presale and a fully MIT-licensed open-source stack, arguing that AI agents are accelerating demand for self-hosting; the new version turns app packaging and networking into graphical workflows, lowering the bar for running Bitcoin nodes and communication services.
Start9 plans to ship the RISC-V router, expand Bitcoin, communications and AI services in the StartOS marketplace, and extend into self-hosted open-source home security cameras.
